Amaka Unaka |
Ms. Amaka Unaka attended the University of California, Berkeley where she received a B.A. in Social Welfare and Legal Studies. While at UC Berkeley, Ms. Unaka served as the president of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), Berkeley chapter and pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Kappa chapter. Ms. Unaka also founded AKANKE, a nonprofit organization that serves girls ages 7-14 who reside in various housing projects in Northern California. Amongst many she received the Exemplary Black Student Leader award from the Onyx newspaper, Outstanding Woman of the Year award from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and the Outstanding Dedication and Community Service Award from Oakland Unified School District for her undying service to underperforming school and poverty stricken communities. At the University of Chicago, Ms. Unaka was the recipient of the Brinks family support fellowship and earned a Master’s in Social Work with a clinical concentration and an emphasis in school social work and family support. Ms. Unaka currently serves as our School Social Worker and coach of our KIPP Step Team (KST). She enjoys babysitting, traveling, knitting, exercising, cooking, surfing, skiing, swimming, and reading.
